Will a nut cracker such as this split a flanged nut?
The torx-head end of the top of my strut split, and now I can't get the nut off. My locking pliers aren't strong enough to keep the shaft from spinning, and the shaft is too smooth for a pipe wrench. I want to try the cracker before I have to get an impact wrench. The strut is bad, so it can be damaged in the process.

Did you try breaking it by thermal shock or using a cutoff wheel?

No, no torch or grinding wheel at the apartment.

Apartment or Gulag?

No it will not, believe me I've tried. I used an angle grinder in the end.

I'll do that if I need to, but I'll try to file down the flange first.

I thought about that but, being a lazy man, the angle grinder was too tempting.

cut the flange.

That's the current plan, though I'm going to file it down.

IF you can get the nut splitter to stay low enough on the flange they will split it, but that is very difficult to do to say the least. Time to invest in a Dremel and some of the good cutoff wheels for it. If you cannot get to the nut easily, you can also try grinding some vertical cuts into the shaft to help your vise grips get a grip.

PITA but should work.
